The Satsuma mandarin, a seedless sort of Japanese origin, was brought to the Neretva valley in 1963. The center of its production is the town of Opuzen and the mandarin plantations spread through the Neretva valley from south of Metkovic down to the sea. The plantations are two kilometers in width and about 24 km in length. In the whole area of Neretva there are about 1,3 milion seedlings growing, expected to give a crop of approximately 70.000 tons of fruit in two or three years.

1959 a Botanical Garden is founded on Lokrum where you can see special and endemic tropic and subtropical plants and other vegetation originating from Australia to South America. Today Lokrum is a Nature Reserve and a Special Forest Vegetation Reserve.
